Focusing on saving Death Row Dogs and Cats from kill shelters; fostering them in a home; providing them with all the love and medical attention they require until they find their forever homes; educating the community about the animal over population problem and the importance of spaying and neutering.

We are in no way affiliated with the "11th hour's" of WA or any other similarly named organizations.

Eleventh Hour Rescue is made up of dedicated individuals who believe that innocent pets deserve love and a place to live where they are honored and cared for. No dog or cat deserves to die simply because they do not have a home.

Every Saturday, we are at the Petsmart in Rockaway for adoptions from 11am to 4pm.

Every other Sunday, we are at the Petco in East Hanover for adoptions from 12pm to 5pm.

Elaine Morgan and Aquatic Apes

I read Elaine Morgan's book, The Descent of Woman, over 20 years ago and I enjoyed it.  It made sense to me.  I'm not exactly sure why I starting digging around the internet yesterday looking for articles about her theory, but that's what happened.  I have not read any of her other books, but they are now on my list.

I watched the BBC program from 1998 about her and the theory - the quality was not a good one, so I went searching again and found this.  I also found a blog that is dedicated to this theory - I've only read a couple of entries and am looking forward to delving into it over the next few days.  I'm sure that the internet will yield even more treasures!

There are a lot of thoughts swirling around my little brain about this and how it relates to feminism, spirituality, evolution, the environment and Life - all subjects of vital interest to me.  As my thoughts coalesce and take a form which I can verbalize, you'll read about it here!

Garlic, the stinking rose

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I love - LOVE - garlic!  I don't think I know how to cook a main meal without it.  If using a recipe for the first time and it calls for garlic, I always - ALWAYS - increase the amount.

My friends who live in Sonoma, California grow garlic and created this poster, which is now available on Amazon.  You can find the link to it here and here. They always send me a box of their homegrown stuff once a year and it is simply divine!  I think the poster image would make a fabulous apron, ceramic tile trivet or a nice linen tea towel.  I hope they expand their offerings!

This image is of Shuar women of the Cordillero del Condor in South America - the rain forest mountain range located between Ecuador and Peru.  I had never heard about them before today when I read an article at Salon about them and their struggles to maintain their way of life and to protect the land.

The Salon article is quite long; I found it fascinating and very disturbing.  The mining companies want gold and other minerals from the area and are willing to destroy everything that lives there in order to get it.  The President of Ecuador has sided with the mining interests - no surprise.

My guide to this simmering “Avatar” in the Amazon was a 57-year-old Shuar chief named Domingo Ankuash. Like many elder Shuar, Ankuash does not appear to be blustering when he says he will die defending his ancestral lands in the province of Morona-Santiago, which borders Peru. Early in my month traveling the Condor, he took me deep into the country for which he is prepared to lay down his life. After a steep two hours’ hike from his village, we arrived at a forest clearing of densely packed earth. Through the trees and hanging vines, a 40-foot waterfall replenished a deep rock-strewn lagoon. The cascade is one of thousands in the Condor cordillera, a rolling buffer between the cliffs of the eastern Andes and the continental flatness of the Amazon basin.

“We have been coming to these sacred cascades since before the time of Christ,” said Ankuash, preparing a palm-leaf spread of melon and mango. “The government has given away land that is not theirs to give, and we have a duty to protect it. Where there is industrial mining, the rivers die and we lose our way of life. They want us to give up our traditions, work in the mines, and let them pollute our land. But we will give our lives to defend the land, because the end is the same for us either way.”

However, President Correa might be surprised by the ferocity of people who have nothing to lose.  Backing any living being into a corner has unexpected consequences for those who would intimidate and bully.

“The strategy is to unite the Shuar like the fingers of a fist,” Ankuash tells me as I prepare to dive into the icy waters of the lagoon below. “The forest has always given us everything we need, and we are planning to defend it, as our ancestors would, with the strength of the spear. To get the gold, they will have to kill every one of us first.”

The most famous case of Shuar “insolence” occurred in 1599, when the Spanish governor of Maca demanded a gold tax from local Indians to fund a celebration of the coronation of Philip III. The night before the tax was due, Shuar armies slaughtered every adult male in the Spanish hamlets and surrounded the governor’s home. They tied the governor to his bed and used a bone to push freshly melted gold down his throat, laughing and demanding to know if he had finally sated his thirst. According to the Jesuit priest and historian Juan de Velasco, the “the horrendous catastrophe” at Maca caused “insolences and destructions” by the “barbaric nations” up and down the Andean spine of New Spain. For the next 250 years, the Spanish mostly stayed away. Occasional attempts by Jesuit missionaries to reestablish contact were met with a welcome basket of skulls pulled from the shrunken heads of gold-hungry Spaniards.

The destruction of our planet for the sake of greedy corporations is incomprehensible to me.  There is no other planet for us - this is it. Without a healthy and habitable planet, we don't exist.

More power to the Shuar and to all other peoples who are pushing back. I lend them my spirit in these struggles.

Phoenix Rising Border Collie Rescue of South Carolina

Rembrandt is a four year old male. He is truly one amazing dog! He came to us from an AL shelter after being dumped. With his loving and gentle ways, he instantly became the favorite among the shelter volunteers. PRBCR rescued him as his time was up. 

In the process of vetting him, we found out he was heartworm positive. He came to NC to be fostered and treated for HW. On the way to his new foster home, one of the volunteers that transported him noticed his hips were "wonky" (her word!) so, we had the vet check him out. X-rays revealed a major fracture of his pelvis! Throughout his stay at the shelter, getting neutered and vaccinated, and the transport all the way to NC, this gentle soul never uttered a sound or alerted us to his discomfort. His greatest desire is to be loved and showered with affection. That is all he has asked of me. 

His pelvis may leave him a bit gimpy, so competitive sports are not for him. But if you are looking for a mildly active companion, you will not want to miss out on him. I guarantee, he is worth every mile you may need to drive to come meet him! I cannot say enough about this truly exceptional dog. Description

We are a small volunteer-staffed group dedicated to finding new permanent, loving homes for border collies in need, and also in educating the public about the nature of the breed, so that rescue will be less necessary in the future. We mainly service South Carolina but as resources allow, can rescue and place dogs in adjoining areas of North Carolina and Georgia. We are registered with the state of South Carolina as a charitable organization and we are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
