Woman Sails Around the World in 72 Days!

Today in women’s history at age 25 journalist Elizabeth Cochran (you may know her by her pen name, Nellie Bly) sailed around the world in 72 days, 6 hours 11 minutes and 14 seconds in 1889. She beat
the fictional record set by Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in Eighty Days.

Bly also was the inventor of investigative reporting, often going undercover for many of her stories. Most notably, Bly went undercover for ten days in an insane asylum as part of an assignment to write about the mentally ill in New York City. Not surprisingly, she discovered the cruel treatment of the patients. She wrote about it in her story, eventually prompting action by the city to reform the institution.
