In the crypt one finds Notre Dame Sous Terre (Our Lady Underground). She is a replica of an old Black Madonna, destroyed during the French Revolution. But this destroyed statue was itself an 11th or 12th century replica of an earlier reference to a small black Goddess of pagan, Druidic origin. What has happened to this staute is not known.
One can only visit the crypt with a guided tour. So the freedom to sit with Notre Dame Sous Terre, to feel Her power in Her presence, is not possible.
"Tales from the Crypt" (cue Toccata and Fugue)
What stories, what knowledge would this meditating Dame have for us, pass on to us, reveal to us? Would we listen? Take Her seriously? Fear Her because She is Underground, in deep silence and in even deeper darkness, with the only source of light emanating from Her?
Would we have the courage to plumb the same depths of our psyches to remember Her?
Or would we keep Her locked away in the underground crypt with some unknown guide hurrying us past Her - nothing to see here, move along, move along. Or worse, quoting the dominant dogma about Her, with the expectation that we believe it - even if that isn't our experience of Her.
In spite of the thousands of years of viewing Her through the prism of patriarchy, there are many cracks that continue to appear in that lens. Our inner and outer eyes and ears see and hear Her as She reveals Herself to us - no running commentary from other sources, only Her.
I am reminded of the ending of the Charge of the Star Goddess:
And you who seek to know Me, know that your
Seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless
You know the Mystery:
For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself,
You will never find it without.
For behold, I have been with you from the beginning,
And I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

From Matthew Fox's essay on The Black Madonna:
5. The Black Madonna calls us to our depths, to living spiritually and radically on this planet and not superficially and unthinkingly and oblivious to the grace that has begotten us in so many ways. The depths to which we are called include the depths of awe, wonder and delight—joy itself is a depth experience we need to re-entertain in the name of the Black Madonna. She calls us to enter into the depths of our pain, suffering and shared grief—not to run from it or cover it up with a myriad of addictions ranging from shopping to drugs and alcohol and sport and superficial religion. She calls us to the depths of our creativity and to entertain the images that are born in and through us. And she calls us to the depths of transformation, of social, economic, gender, racial and eco justice and the struggle that must be maintained to carry on solidarity with the oppressed of any kind.
She calls us to the depths of our psyche which, as Meister Eckhart says, are “dark” and to the depths of the earth, which are surely dark and to the depths of the sky that have also been rediscovered for all their darkness. Black holes abound in space as well as in the mysterious breadth of our souls. We need to explore them. They too are fecund. They have much to teach us.
I am quite in awe of the depth of your daily offerings...then to find out that Lesson #5 of the Black Madonna is about just that...depth in living. I'd say you're doing a great job - thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dawn, for your very kind comment. For someone who wasn't sure she even wanted to participate in this meme, I certainly have found a lot to write about!
DeleteWonderful post and love this Black Madonna ~ she is beautiful ~ ( A Creative Harbor) artmusedog and Carol ^_^
ReplyDeleteThis is a strong and powerful woman - I like her! Your posts are inspiring Delphyne. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteRuby
Thank you, Ruby - I really appreciate your comment!
DeleteHi Delphyne. I love the Black Madonna look. She is awesome. Your post is informative. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gloria! I'm enjoying the meme far more than I ever thought!
DeleteHow interesting that the statue relates back to a madonna of druidic origin. But then, I didn't know that the "immaculate conception" myth related back to Isis and Osiris and their immaculately conceived offspring, Horus.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how related these myths are worldwide. The more I read, the more I see this and how related we are through these stories....they serve to unite, not divide us.
DeleteWhat a beauty she is shown against a sensuous tapestry of some sort. Thanks for the link and a reminder of Starhawk. I haven't read her in years but I was influenced by her in earlier years.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Fran - yes, Starhawk had a real impact on me along with many others from that time. I love The Charge of the Star Goddess - it's a prayer I can embrace without conditions.
DeleteI adore the way you tie history, philosophy, religion,
ReplyDeleteculture and...oh everything together like a gift.
So much to think about. Thank you.
And I like to see this Queen seated on a throne♥
Thank you, Lisa - I have to tie them together in order for them to make any sense to me. I'm one of those who need to see the big picture before I get into the details. The parts by themselves don't make any sense to me without knowing the sum of those parts - or at least, more of the sum of the parts!
Deleteamazing linking history and creativity! Isn't it too bad that those touring can't have time alone with Notre Dame because of vandals?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Norma - I'm a bit more cynical and think that the church hierarchy is terrified of people spending time with The Mother for fear they might hear another story.
DeleteFrom your heart to mine and back again dear one.

Right back atcha, Gemma! xoxo

ReplyDeleteThanks, MMT!
Deletewhat mysteries, i do wonder? good questions, worth thinking apon.
ReplyDeleteAh, Mystery - one of my favorite things to ponder!
Delete"For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself,
ReplyDeleteYou will never find it without."
so utterly true!
Yes, it most certainly is!
DeleteIt is a bit like at Lourdes - the stream of healing waters have been closed off to the public - so now one can only touch the sides of the cave. You are doing a great job of claiming Mary back for all women and I thank you for that. I am the founder of the Temple of Mary and we are organising the Sacred Feminine Festival in South Africa next year - you may want to visit my blog http://bookofmarysacredheart.blogspot.com and my website www.shekinahdove.org. blessings to you
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hettienne - I will bookmark both sites and visit, probably after this mem is finished. I'm finding that it's taking a lot of my time, but I'm not complaining. I'm just behind on the mundane chores around the house!
